The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Stellenbosch University is delighted to inform individuals about a collaboration with the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. This partnership offers a select few the opportunity to pursue full-time scholarships for either Masters (with a full thesis) or PhD studies.

These scholarships encompass a wide range of disciplines within our Faculty. However, they are specifically focused on research topics falling under the following themes:

REQUIREMENTS FOR ELIGIBLE CANDIDATES:

  • Candidates should have achieved a top-notch distinction (scoring 75% or above) in the final year of their previously completed degree.
  • Candidates are expected to submit a writing sample along with their application. The type of sample required depends on the level of study they are applying for:
  • PhD applicants should submit their Master’s thesis.
  • MA applicants should submit their research essay from their Honours program.
  • Candidates can also include any published academic articles that are relevant to their application.
  • At the time of application, candidates must not exceed the age of 30 for a Masters scholarship or 35 for a PhD scholarship.
  • Candidates must be available to start their studies in February 2024.
  • In addition to the scholarship application, candidates must also apply for admission to Stellenbosch University.
  • While candidates are not obligated to be registered or have a supervisor, it is recommended that they inquire about the availability of suitable supervisors in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences within their specific research field before submitting their application.

RECOMMENDATIONS 

  • The following information should be provided to demonstrate eligibility for the academic position:
  • Previous publications or written works that have been released.
  • Achievements such as awards or grants received.
  • Pertinent professional or artistic background.
  • Proficiency in languages other than English for academic use.
  • To be considered for the academic position, applicants must present a track record of their published materials. This includes any articles, books, or papers they have previously written and made available to the public.
  • In addition to publications, it is beneficial for candidates to highlight any accolades or funding they have received. Awards and grants serve as indicators of recognition and support for their work, enhancing their qualifications for the position.
  • Relevant professional or artistic experience is also crucial in demonstrating suitability for the academic role. This includes any past employment or engagements that directly relate to the field of study or the specific discipline within which the position falls.
  • Lastly, proficiency in languages other than English for academic purposes can be advantageous. Being able to effectively communicate and use languages other than English broadens the potential for collaboration and research opportunities with scholars from different regions of the world.
  • By providing comprehensive and unique information in each of these areas, applicants can present a compelling case for their eligibility and qualifications for the academic position.

AWARDS AND REWARDS?

PhD scholarships offer a total amount of R357,500.00 over a duration of three years. Along with covering study fees and providing an allowance, the scholarship provides opportunities for research collaboration with your supervisor. These collaborations may include a writing retreat, attending conferences, and covering publication costs up to R52,500. To avail these additional funds, an application can be made during the study period.

For MA scholarships, the funding amount ranges up to R160,000 and covers a period of 18 months to two years. In addition to study fees and an allowance, the scholarship offers possibilities for research collaboration with your supervisor. These collaborations may include a writing retreat, attending conferences, and covering publication costs up to R20,375. To access these funds, an application can be made during the study period.

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE PROGRAM?

  • Official application forms can be accessed HERE.
  • Write a motivation letter that does not exceed 600 words.
  • Prepare a pre-proposal or research idea, limited to 500 words, that describes your intended research question and conceptualization related to any of the three project themes. Your pre-proposal should discuss the unique contribution your research will make to the existing knowledge in the field of study, the problem statement, the methodology/theoretical framework/philosophical underpinnings you plan to use, and the feasibility of your study. Please keep in mind that your research should directly address one of the three project themes.
  • Provide a certified copy of your complete academic transcript.
  • Submit a certified copy of your Honours or MA degree certificate, or its foreign equivalent. If you have completed the qualification but haven’t received the certificate yet, obtain official proof from the relevant institution stating that the degree will be awarded before March 2023.
  • Include a certified copy of your South African ID or passport if you are an international student.
